CTI-CFF pledges USD 1.3 million to improve marine resources management at Our Ocean Conference 2018

Bali, Indonesia, October 2018 – The Coral Triangle Initiative for Coral Reefs Fisheries, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF) pledges its full support and continued commitment to protect and sustain ocean’s resources, at the fifth Our Ocean Conference held in Bali, Indonesia last 29-30 October 2018.

The CTI-CFF, a multilateral partnership of six countries – Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, the Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste – committed USD 1.3 million next year for the preservation and management of a healthy marine and coastal ecosystem in the face of climate change. The amount will be used for implementing the CTI-CFF Regional Plan of Action (RPOA), particularly  activities such as strengthening networks of marine protected areas (MPAs) and sustainable fisheries, in ensuring food security in the face of climate change.

“The said amount is a continued commitment of the CTI since the past three years, where more than USD 2 million had already been contributed by the CT6 countries and utilized for similar activities,” CTI-CFF Regional Secretariat Interim Executive Director Dr. Hendra Yusran Siry said.

“Further, the CTI-CFF will continue the implementation of the Guide for Vulnerability Assessment and Local Early Action Planning (LEAP Guide) and the CTI-FF Region-wide Early Action Plan for Climate Change Adaptation (REAP-CCA),” Dr. Siry said.

The LEAP Guide is a comprehensive set of cutting-edge scientific and social instruments that local governments and communities can use to assess their vulnerability to climate change and develop their own local action plans to address these. On the other hand, the REAP CCA includes immediate regional and national adaptation measures that need to be taken across Coral Triangle to build coastal community resilience to climate change.

The CTI-CFF Pledge or Commitment was announced at the OOC Plenary Session on Climate Related Impacts to the Ocean on the first day of the OOC 2018, where His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco was present to chair the Session.

The Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI -CFF) is a multilateral partnership of six countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste (CT6).  The CT6 countries work together to sustain extraordinary marine and coastal resources by addressing crucial issues such as food security, climate change, and marine biodiversity. The CTI-CFF was established formally during the Leaders’ Summit in 2009 with approval of the leaders from the CT6 countries. They adopted the CTI Regional Plan of Action (CTI RPOA) which is a strategic action plan with five goals: (1) designation of effectively managed seascapes; (2) application of an ecosystem approach to fisheries management; (3) establishment of a fully functional marine protected area system; (4) strengthening climate change adaptation and resilience; and (5) improving the status of threatened marine species.

About Regional Secretariat

The Regional Secretariat (RS) of the CTI-CFF is mandated to promote regional cooperation, knowledge sharing, and learning facilities within the six member countries of the Coral Triangle. The RS coordinates and monitors the progress of the implementation of the Regional Plan of Action (RPOA) goals. The RS coordinates and supports official meetings and events linked to the CTI-CFF process, including cross-cutting services in support of monitoring and evaluation, financial coordination, information management and outreach. It also coordinates the implementation of CTI-CFF RPOA and provides support to, and coordination with, NCCs, including advising the CTI-CSO on emerging opportunities and priorities to reaching the goals and targets of the RPOA. The RS also acts as the channel of communication and information sharing and foster networking among the Parties, CTI Partners and other organizations and donors in the efforts to promote the objectives of the CTI-CFF.  The Regional Secretariat is based in Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.
