The 12th International Coral Reef Symposium, the world's leading coral reef science conference held once every four years, will begin on Monday, July 9, in Cairns, Australia, with the CTI-CFF taking center stage as the model for linking science to policy and action.

The CTI-CFF Interim Regional Secretariat presented a white paper illustrating how the initiative has become a model for implementing sustainable development and the blue economy commitments at the sidelines of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). CTI-CFF Executive Chair Dr. Suseno Sukoyono presented the paper at the Indonesia Pavilion in Rio de Janeiro on June 19, 2012.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — A group of countries from Southeast Asia and the Pacific came together at the Rio+20 Summit this week to showcase their collective efforts to save the Coral Triangle, one of the most biologically diverse and ecologically rich marine regions on Earth.

At a high-level side event hosted by the Government of Indonesia, the Coral Triangle countries renewed their commitment to the multi-country partnership Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF).

The six Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) member states have developed a policy framework to address transboundary fisheries issues such as illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, live reef fish trade, overfishing, and bycatch of protected and endangered species. The common policy framework, developed through a series of regional exchanges supported by USAID’s US CTI Support Program, was finalized at a workshop held on May 22–25, 2012, in Putrajaya, Malaysia.
